Writing Process Photo Essay

My desk where I work on my assignments

Throughout the course of UWP 1Y, my writing process has been consistent with the same writing process that improves my writing skills, as well as my work. I usually do my assignments on my desk in my room, where I can stay focused and avoid any distractions. My desk setup consists of my laptop, resources I might need, water bottle, post-it notes, and writing utensils. Also, there’s an outlet near my desk, just in case I need to charge my phone or laptop so I wouldn’t need to move during my writing process.

Reading assignment prompt

Brainstorming ideas/topics
Depending on the assignment, I often start my writing process with reading the prompt and brainstorming an idea/topic. Then, I choose a genre for my writing, whether it’s something stated in the assignment, like a blog, a formal essay, or anything I can choose on my own that fits the assignment requirements.

Researching articles

Creating a draft

Before starting to write a draft, I do my research by going to Google Search box and typing in the topic of my blog post for the week. After scanning at the results, I pick out 2-3 relevant sources and started reading them. Besides reading articles, texts, I also watch YouTube and lecture videos, and review the slides if needed. After that, I start working on the draft to submit for peer review. I often split my screen into half where I have the sources and the draft side by side so that I can pick the evidence while writing.

I often use Google Docs to write my papers. It allows me to go back and forth editing them and I like how it automatically saves any changes. In addition, I like to work on my laptop because I can carry it anywhere with me around the house.

Peer Review

Besides reading the prompt, sources, I also read the rubric to make sure that I’m following the instructions and get the best out of my writing. Then, I submit my draft on Eli Review for peer feedback. After being assigned into a group, I start reading others’ drafts and giving them feedback. While waiting for the feedback from my peers, I continue working on my draft, adding more ideas, and fixing errors.

Revising and checking error

Copy & paste my final draft into Blogger
Following, I create a revision plan with the feedback I received and start editing the draft, checking errors, and rereading it aloud to make sure everything is clear and makes sense. Next, I copy and paste my blog post into Blogger, add appropriate pictures, and edit the layout of the blog to make it more appealing.

Publishing my post and writing a reflection

Afterwards, I publish my post and copy and paste the link to my post into Canvas. Before submitting my blog post, I write a reflection, which reflects on the strengths of the post, the process of writing it, and the feedback. Finally, I submit my blog post and reflection comment after carefully revising and rereading it.

Drinking tea
And going for a walk to take a break from writing

I usually take breaks in between my writing process when I feel overwhelmed, want to eat, or get a drink. Also, I often go on a walk to relax, exercise, and take a break from sitting for too long. In my opinion, daily walking is beneficial for my health, helps me digest food faster and stay healthy. Additionally, I usually go to the front porch and drink some iced tea as a way to relax and get some fresh air before returning to work on my assignments. Moreover, I think it’s good to take breaks during my writing process because it allows me to come back with a clear mind, new perspective, and maybe change my focus and bring new ideas to my writing.

In conclusion, I use this process for most of my writing assignments. I don’t deviate from this process since almost all of my writing assignments are involved in similar process and are given by the instructors with specific instructions and grading rubrics. I have included every part of my writing process in this photo essay since none of them was hard to represent. The activities, tools, techniques, and routines in my process are working well for me. My typical writing process has helped me to effectively work on my drafts, improve my writing skills, and develop as a writer. However, I would like to be more creative and more engaged in the ongoing conversation about the topic. Also, I would like to change the environment in which I typically write. Although my desk in my room is now a good and quiet place for me to write, I prefer sitting on the front porch or on the grass in the park, where the space is bigger, more fresh and comfortable. An environment with no distraction, perfect weather, and some water and snacks would be a great place to compose my papers.
